Namgyal Lhamo is a Tibetan folk and Opera singer based in the Netherlands. Lhamo joined the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts at an early age, becoming one of its star performers, where her renditions of Nangma and Toeshe became widely acclaimed. She has toured widely around the world and has performed with artists such as the Beastie Boys, Alanis Morissette and Björk. Lhamo’s style of songwriting is deeply rooted in Tibetan tradition, free of political discourse, and yet powerful in expressing Tibet’s culture today. Lhamo has released music videos and starred in two films, Karma and Drapchi, both directed by Arvind Iyer. Lhamo told VOA that music can sometimes communicate more than mere words.
