ICC has initiated investigations on election related violence and human right violations in Kenya. ICC prosecutor also hinted they can consider intervening in Somalia if asked by Security Council. However, the ICC prosecutor said his office can intervene in Somalia because it is not a member of ICC.

The Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno-Ocampo spoke to VOA-Somali today on the investigation he is carrying out in Kenya in preparation to undertake prosecution proceedings on suspects who took part in the 2008 election violence. He has said that he hopes his intervention will help Kenya to have a peaceful election in 2012. He told VOA that everyone is worried about the possibility of a new violence in the next election in Kenya and it is important to prevent that from happening.

He emphasized on the importance of defining suspects to be prosecuted for the violence that happened in the last election before the next electoral time starts.  Mr. Moreno-Ocampo believes that the investigation can be concluded in time once the judges have authorized the process.

On Somalia, he said he cannot intervene because Somalia is not a member of the ICC. However, he said it is up to the UN Security Council request his intervention.
