Teaching Young People About Personal Finance

09 April 2009

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.

April is National Financial Literacy Month in the United States. As the country faces a deep recession, Americans are paying closer attention to personal finance. Some critics partly blame the crisis on Americans’ low savings rate and high personal debt.

But efforts to increase financial knowledge have grown in the last ten years. Government, community and business leaders have pushed for teaching young people about the importance of saving, budgets and the true cost of credit.

Credit cardThe Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy is based in Washington, D.C. It is an organization of about one hundred eighty groups, government agencies and businesses. Its goal is to provide financial knowledge to children and young adults before they get into debt.

Jump$tart’s Executive Director Laura Levine says many young people misuse credit cards without meaning to. She says they often start by making the lowest payment required. Over time, their credit limit is increased, but they do not pay off their debt. Laura Levine says young people can take on more debt than they can deal with.

The government says forty-five percent of college students have credit card debt. The average amount owed is more than three thousand dollars.

High credit limits are especially dangerous for college students. John Ninfo is a bankruptcy judge in Rochester, New York. He started the Credit Abuse Resistance Education Program.

It provides resources on its Web site for parents, teachers and students about financial issues. Judge Ninfo says he often sees people in their late twenties seeking bankruptcy protection in court. He says the combination of credit card debt and big student loans is burying young people in debt and driving many of them to bankruptcy.

The results of bad credit can be serious. Seventy percent of employers look at the credit histories of job candidates. In some fields, like law enforcement, bad credit means you cannot get a job.

Former President George Bush formed the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy last year. That group has called for students at all grade levels to receive financial education.  Currently, only seventeen states require personal finance to be taught at least as part of other courses.

And that's the VOA Special English Economics Report, written by Mario Ritter. Transcripts and archives are at voaspecialenglish.com. I'm Steve Ember.

Comments:

1. My opinion

In my country, credit cards are not popular, so that the personal finan young people seem to depend on the parents too much. They receive money from their mom or dad every times they need. And since, they think that making money is very easy and use them very unwisely. I'm now being in that situation and I really want to know about the real meaning of money, but my school life doesn't give me enough time to even rest (I have to study from 6am till 11pm, no exaggeration). And this is very dangerous. Some youth spend hundred to million thousands dong (equal to hundreds to thousands dollars) on very useless things such as games, clothes, etc. This is very dangerous to our country's future.

6. Finacial prágam for young

In Viet Nam do not have credit card, Viet nam is still poor contry. So young people are hardly finacing for their education program. especially international training programs. So in my point of view, the credit card is basically useful. But of cause too abuse or misuse is not good and cause consequence. So that program is necessary.

8. How it is?

In our country, students usually can't get the credit cards. Because they generally have no postponement from military service and don't have a job. So I surprised, that in USA there was a lot of students, who spent bank's money.

10. my opinion

In my country, credit cards have not been so porpular that personal finance management should be come a serious problems. Now, I have a job but it can't not give me enough to support my everyday life as well as any training course. I want to learn MBA in a local university ( of course I never dream of learning abroad) but i can't find any money somewhere. If only I were in America and had a credit card with just 1000USD limit ( just enough:)). But, I also know that, credit card abuse in particular and sub-prime debts are one of the essential reason causing the financial crisis in America and then, spread over the world. so, I think that youth financial education is really useful in some developed countries like Japan or America. Young people, especially those haven't not earned money, don't know the meaning of money and the consequence of debts. They only like to sastify themself with money of their parents. It's time they took responsibility for their activities. It's my opinion.

13. money and education

behaviour about money is a problem of education; parents are responsable of teahcing main characterictics of our system; young people mustn't have own credit cards before 18 years old. Besides, parents must be an example for children ; i don't think chidren need special finance lessons.

15. It is a need

I think it is good idea and a need to do especially in developed countries like the US where credit conditions are quite open for the young. A good knowledge of spending will help college students both present and in their future business. I think it is also a need for adults who will know how to balance between earnings and spendings

18. My oppinion

I listen manytimes voaspecialenglish, such as economics reports,Education report and I like your mission, last time in Economics report You talked about Youth finance(in education, busness and etc...)in our country no financial on youth often in Education but many young people need to be financed.ex; I have 11years after my secondary studies, and my possibilities don't allow me to continue University studies.I'm jobless,no enough qualification.the youth financed for university studies are some orphans of genocide survivals but many we're mixed with two ethnics of rwanda.forex:my father were hutu,he died,my mother is alive,is tutsi but very poor. For 11years I lack how to complete my studies to be qualified with university levels;that means youth are yet under development different of those of USA.thanks alot

22.

In china, most people do not seem to have such a problem. because the credit card is not very popular among the country, most people, especially elder ones, still fond of earning before spending theory of living which results people can hardly find debt in their finance. i personally prefer earning one cent then spending one not the US's way of spending one then earning, even if somehow it does good in economics, however the recession somehow turns this habit does not always do good as the US government still own trillions of dollar to China which is unfair to the lender while Americans spend the money supposedly to be ours. I do think Americans should think of a way to fix their spending habit.

Teaching young people about financial literacy in school isn't still popular in my country. It's a good opportunity to teach young people about it in the situation of recently worldwide economic crisis. Especially teaching by parents about personal cash flow is important to prevent children from bankrupt. Also, I have to learn more finance by myself.

27. youth financial education

One key to youth financial education is starting early. The last 5 years we have traveled the United States and read Sammy books and played Sammy money music to over 250,000 students - some as young as age 3. The response has been fantastic. More efforts are needed. Sam X Renick www.itsahabit.com www.sammyrabbitblog.com Changing children & family lives one habit and dime at a time by teaching kids smart money habits and to get in the habit of saving.
