Making a Solar Water Heater

19 April 2009
This is the VOA Special English Development Report.

Solar water heaters are devices that use energy from the sun to heat water. Solar water heating is used around the world.

The solar water heater described here is based on a design developed some years ago in Afghanistan. Since then, it has been built and used in many countries. It can heat seventy liters of water to sixty degrees Celsius. It can do this between sunrise and noon on a clear day with an average outside temperature of thirty-two degrees Celsius.

There are two parts to the solar water heater. One part is made of a sheet of metal painted black. This metal surface, placed in contact with the water, will heat the water. Black-painted surfaces that receive the sun's heat become hotter than surfaces of any other color.

The black metal plate is called a collector. There are several kinds of metal sheets that can be used for the collector. Metal sheets that have raised sections will work very well. These corrugated sheets often are used to make the roofs of houses.

Once the water is heated, it is kept hot with material called insulation. This allows the water to stay warm for a long time.

The second part of the solar water heater holds the water for the system. This storage tank can be a container that holds about one hundred liters. Two rubber pipes are attached to the water storage tank. One pipe lets water flow into the system. The other lets water flow out.

When the water heater is working correctly, water will flow from the storage tank to the collector and back again. You can use the hot water at the top of the tank for washing and cleaning. You can change the flow of water so that the temperature is hot or warm as desired.

This solar water heater is easy to build and operate. It will last about two years before the rubber pipes need to be replaced.

There is also something else you will need to make the solar water heater work -- the sun. As you might expect, the heater will heat water only on sunny days.

You can get more information about projects like solar water heaters from EnterpriseWorks/VITA. This nonprofit group works to fights poverty in many countries. The Web site is enterpriseworks.org. Choose the link for News & Resources, then click on Publications.

The daily solar energy in each square meter is about 18 mega Joules on Equator Line. This is equivalent energy produced by the burning a third of 1 kg gasoline or a little more. We received a lot of energy from the sun. Congratulations!

3. I was dreaming about...

when I was a little elementary scool student, over than 30 years ago, I was dreaming of a system with which I could take a bath in warm water, and sleep on a hot floor in the winter with no charge at all, because the system would work from the sun's heat. That kind of system has already been invented long ago, but still rarely used. These days oil prices are much higher than ever before, so I am still dreaming of a technically cutting-edge house whose roof is covered with transparent glasses. Then I would not worry about electric charges, boiler charges and so on..

9. i'm very interesting in sola water heater

I thought about using sola energy to save electric coat last time. but I had no ideas. I think that idea is good for our life. we can save electric cost and invented something for the furture. if i make a sola water heater , i will use it . i have a experience using hot water. when i stay in homestay i didn't have a electric blanket ,so i use hot water in the bottle to make warm on bed . at that time i was thinking about solar water energy. actually that's not quite related to this topic. but i want to say to you,.^^

10. Eco-friendly sun energy

The other day, I happened to watch a program on TV, which was featuring solar energy system. It was surprising to learn that there are people here in Japan who daily carry bags which collect the sun heat to generate electricity. Once fully-stored, they can use the batteries for digital cameras and cellphones. I hope it's not so distant future when science and technologies will free us from our dependency on the finite resources of the earth.

12. Comment

I have one solar heater, it is expensive in relation to other heater systems but is friendly for the environment and it does not use fossil fuel, besides you can use its tank as water deposit if for any reason you do not have water and also the heating process kills water bacteria so you can use also this water as safe water to drink. I really like this system however there is a problem when you have cloudy days.

13. CAN I SAVE MY MONEY ON SOLAR WATER HEATER ?

i am very interested in this usefull system but i still wonder in the winter when i need hot water there is no sun for the system. in VIETNAM if you buy a electic water heater it is much cheaper than you buy a solar water heater . I live in HANOI so winter is 3 months long , in summer i do not need hot water I think this system is good for the south , anyway thanks alot for the news

17.

This sort of devices are energy-green and somehow should be designed as money saving, because you need not any gas or electricity to heat the water. but however for this reason is still blocking developing countries like China being widely spread this technology as the construction materials are considered expensive. So the only way that will let us all use this method of heating water is to reduce the money of building it required so that even people in the most less developed countries can install this metal sheets as their house roofs.
