Alcohol, the 'Asian Flush' and the Risk of Cancer

Many East Asians get a red face when they drink alcohol. This is the result of a genetic condition that also increases drinkers' risk of esophageal cancer. Transcript of radio broadcast:

This is the VOA Special English Health Report.
A question from Taiwan: Chung-Li wants
to know why his face turns red when he drinks alcohol. | | A party in Tokyo | This effect called facial flushing is a
common reaction to alcohol among East Asians. It affects an estimated
thirty-six percent of Japanese, Chinese and Koreans. The reaction is also known
as "Asian flush" or "Asian glow." For many, even a small amount of alcohol
can cause unpleasant effects. Most commonly, their face, neck and sometimes
their whole body turns red. People might also feel lightheaded and sick to
their stomach. They might experience a burning sensation, increased heart rate,
shortness of breath and headaches. The
cause is a genetic difference that they are born with called an ALDH2
deficiency. It prevents their bodies from processing alcohol the way other people
do. But
the effects might be more serious than just a red face. Researchers warn of a link
between this condition and an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus from
drinking alcohol. A new report appeared in March in the journal PLoS Medicine,
published by the Public Library of Science. The more alcohol that people with this deficiency drink,
the greater their risk. In Japan and South Korea, for example, many people have
the deficiency but still drink heavily. Researchers found that these drinkers
develop a form of esophageal cancer six to ten times more often than those
without the deficiency. Esophageal
cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It can be treated when found early, but
once it grows the chances of survival drop sharply. The
researchers estimate that at least five hundred forty million people have the
deficiency, about eight percent of the world. Philip
Brooks is a researcher at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism in the United States. He says it is important to educate people
about the link between the alcohol flushing effect and esophageal cancer. He says doctors should ask East Asian patients about
their experiences with facial flushing after drinking alcohol. Those with a
history of it should be advised to limit their alcohol use. They should also be
warned that cigarette smoking works with the alcohol in a way that further
increases the risk of esophageal cancer. And that's the VOA Special English
Health Report, written by June Simms. Archives are at voaspecialenglish.com.

1. No more alcohol for me
I'm definitely ALDH2 deficient, I'm Chinese. Just had 3/4 can of a Tiger beer at home after a workout and am flushing already. I have a 24 pack in my fridge (don't ask me how I got it) and some Asahis. Am going to give it all away to my friends who can drink (ie: don't flush).
Such a waste, but since my tolerance is so low anyways, it makes sense cos the hotness and light headedness from drinking just a little, come to think of it, isn't really all that pleasant. No more alc0hol from now on! Maybe 0% ABV malt beverages... *snicker*.

2. My Experience with Alcohol
It is worth mentioning here that in Islam - as the completion of the previous religions- Alcohol is forbidden, so for me I have now 42 years old I have never drunk it. and so smoking for every thing which proved medically to harm the body or the brain is considers a sin. true Muslim seeks a great reward from the Lord on quitting it.

3. It´s depends on how much you drink
Beer, wines and any other of these, can be good or bad, depending on the amount. one or two beers talking with friends is not harmfull, I think, a couple of cups of good wine even protect people from many deseases, but when you increase the numbers of drinks, that can be very dangerous doing the opossite effect, so life is only one time and we have to enjoy of everything in it, drinking, eating all kind of food etc but mesuaring quite properly the portions and life keep on being far delicious.nothing is good nothing is bad everything depend on the proportion. I love VOA and I´m learning a lot. thank you

6. well..
I am Korean.
I turn red when I drink alcohol, and it is a family heritage. All of my family members get a red face when they drink alcohol feeling uncomfortable. So I don't like drinking at all. Once or twice I drink a year. The problem is that Koreans are in an unavoidable culture in which they are made to keep drinking in bars.
Refusing to drink is not a polite attitude, that's a problem.

9. so it's genetic?
Gee, mom told me to get used to drinking. I work on a cruise ship and there are parties always. As an asian girl, I was taught not to drink in a public setting , but well... nobody party like seamen. So mom told me to learn how NOT TO flush after drinking. Well, now I know it's genetic, there is not much I can do but to stay as far away as possible. Sorry mom, it's in the genes.

free open acssess medical journal
and this evidence was from case controle syudy.
it is weak evidence because of including confouding factor. and only one study result.
generaly first case-controle study indicate large OR.
then more study going cohort or RCT the risk revel will be down.
perhaps other food intake , smoking habit ,alchole intake volume, times , needed to adjust.

Face flushers who areexposed to cigarette smoke are 190times more likely to develop esophageal cancer. This frightning fact means that people who smoke in public may be responsible for causing face flushers death. It is time to ban smoking in all public places

I think, most people with face flush when drinking alcohol don't like to drink. So they migh have little risk of esophasus cancer than others. But I'm very interested in listening about the ALDH2, and why
some people have face flushing and others do not.

35. Eerie but profound spirits culture
China is abundant in agricultural productions, such as wheat, grain and so on. The wine culture was deeply embedded into our splendid culture. Long ago, the war was frequent in China, sodiers drank spirits to fight for their country more audaciously. The wine was not only regarded as a kind of "stimulant", but also treated as the muse for the poets.
