In Sri Lanka, Quarter-Century of War Ends

18 May 2009

Update: Sri Lanka's state television station has announced that Tamil Tiger rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is dead. Earlier media reports said he was killed while trying to flee the war zone early Monday in an ambulance. On Sunday the rebels' international relations chief said in a statement on the Web site TamilNet that their battle has reached "its bitter end." President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared victory on Saturday. | More from VOA News

This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English.

The Sri Lankan army has been leading what it called a "final push" against Tamil Tiger rebels. A military spokesman told VOA that the army hoped to free all civilians trapped in rebel territory by Sunday. The military said troops were moving in from the north and the south on the narrow area of coastline still held by the rebels.

On Friday, the United Nations human rights office called for an investigation of possible war crimes in Sri Lanka. The office said the behavior of the military and the rebels could meet the legal meaning of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

A U.N. spokesman expressed concern about reports that government shelling has killed civilians. He also expressed concern over reports of rebels shooting those trying to flee to safety.

This week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent his top aide to press for an end to the Sri Lankan conflict.

Almost two hundred thousand Tamil civilians in the north have been displaced since fighting intensified in January. Some people have been able to escape across the waters of a lagoon to a government-controlled area. But thousands of civilians reportedly have been killed and many thousands more wounded.

The International Red Cross has described the humanitarian situation as "unimaginable." The Red Cross has been unable to bring in food or remove the wounded and sick from the area of fighting.

Sri Lanka has been seeking a two billion dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund to help its economy. American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this week that this was, in her words, "not an appropriate time to consider" the loan. But I.M.F. chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Friday that Sri Lanka clearly needs help. Reuters news agency reported that he said the I.M.F. is working to find a solution in the next few weeks.

Sri Lanka is an island of twenty-one million people in the Indian Ocean. Three-fourths are ethnic Sinhalese. The conflict began more than twenty-five years ago, when minority Tamils began fighting for an independent homeland.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam once controlled a large area of the north and east. But now, military officials say the area held by the Tamil Tigers has been reduced to just a few square kilometers of beachfront.

The government says the military offensive is also a hostage rescue operation. It says the rebels are hiding among civilians. On Wednesday, President Obama deplored the rebels' use of civilians as human shields. But he also called on the Sri Lankan government to act responsibly.

There have been reports in recent days that shelling killed hundreds of civilians. On Wednesday, artillery shells hit the only remaining hospital in the area of fighting.

The government promised last month to end its use of heavy weapons. It says the rebels are the ones killing innocent people. The rebels blame the government.

And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. I'm Steve Ember.

7. Peace accompanying you and me

The civil war of Sri Lanka ends, which is good news for all Sri Lanka's people. A war is ruthless. It deprived of countless lives around the world.Yet there is not a leader or a government who wants to stop a war indeed though they always say that the world needs peace. Loving peace is only their slogans. When peace conflicts with their interests, they will start a war until they gain their goals. We need not to look back ancient wars, only in the 20th century, wars have killed thousands of millions of innocent people around the world especially the world war II. I hate war. I hate then-Japanese government of world war II. The Japanese miliary viciously slaughtered 300,000 innocent lives in NanKing in December,1937, raping women, burning up houses and so on.But their government never formally admits their crimes, which has deeply hurt the feelings of Chinese and Asian people.I always think why our human beings like to solve conflicts using war. I never find the answer. But I sincerely h

14. International tribunal for Sri Lanka

The mythology indoctrinated fanatical Rajapakse regime in Sri Lanka is conducting mass killing of Tamils to achieve its chauvinistic goals. Beside, the terror regime is involved in terror tactics such as: torture and disappearances and mass imprisonment of Tamils, killing of journalists, execution of aid workers and the subsequent cover-ups. All these crimes are committed with deceptive propaganda, with the help from certain external media outlets, political forces and hired agents. An international tribunal for Sri Lanka is urgently needed to account for serious violation of minority rights and crimes committed by Rajapakse and his henchmen and to account for Prabakarans terrorist acts.

19. International community must take the responsability of tamils killings.

Im honestly dissapointed the way how this world behave. Very much hypocrits and Ignorants in the top power. All they want is business, unless nothing. They are all well aware and know exactly what is happning in Srilanka for Tamils. But, as Tamils are minority and got nothing to trade with. So, this is the end. Tamils must understand this. War will never ends but changed the dimention. Coz, what is done by Srilankan govt, so far unable to stop by International community. This is the way world gave its green light for gnocide. Many trips from top lobby guys to Srilanka recently, i just wanted to ask them, how was your hotel room and meal you had? No point act by saying We are concernd, We are worried...for how long you gonna say this same crap?, after harm was done, families has been destroyed, women been raped, children been killed. So, directly or indirectly you have blood on your hands cos, you let it happen in front of your eyes. You're as well responsible for killing. By saying

20. Who is the terrorist

Sri Lanka endangered 200,000 civilians and civilians were used to bring down LTTE to their knees. News are reaching almost 20,000 civilians were dead within last 4 months and many more were injured and deprived from access to medical facilities. Repeatedly hospitals were attacked by government to demoralise LTTE and give up their arms. Any local media publish these news were attached and media personnel were beaten and many were killed. My question is who is the terrorist group in Sri Lanka?

21. Violence breeds violence

The history of Sri Lanka has been rife with inequity. The majority of Sri Lankans populated the island in about the 5th century BC from North India, with the Sinhalese emerging as the most dominant tribe among them. Tamils began migrating to Lanka in about the 3rd century BC, and admittedly, additional Tamils were brought to the island in the 18th/19th century by the British to work on tea plantations. But even this migration is a full 100 years before Sri Lankan independence (1948). Post-independence, the Sinhalese majority - led first by Bandarnaike, and then his hawkish wife, systematically stripped the Tamil people of their rights. And these were basic rights - for example, the right to citizenship; or the right to vote. What were they supposed to do? Return to India? - a land that their forefathers left at least 100 - 200 years ago. That's an absurd position, and tantamount to the sort of ethnic cleansing imposed by the Turkish on the Armenians, the Russians and Germans

A bright future awaits for the young srilankans!!! I still cant believe that the terrible war is over............... yipee!!!! Iam not a fan of politicians or the president mahinda but today i would say 'keep up the good work' to the srilankan government, president and to the most important team the srilankan navy who fought day and night for us, GO SRILANKA!!!!! today we have proved that the MIGHTY LIONS are more powerful compared to the COWARD TIGERS!!! the tamils say that ltte fought for them but what they didnt understand was that prabakaran fought for himself, for his greed and wishes only and not for the people, he used them as a shield to hide behind. So today lets forget about OUR RACE instead will keep in mind the only thing that is important now that is WE ARE THE MIGHTY LIONS AND ARE PROUD TO BE SRILANKANS and let us hold hands and travel in one path that is towards the path of light, freedom, liberty, equality and unity.... I congratulate further the courageous work done by SLA and excellent leadership provided to them, something that was amiss before. LTTE is dead. Now I hope peace returns for every Lankan irrespective of ethnicity. P.S. I don't belong to wither of the ethnic groups but I am happy that finally the worlds deadliest terrorist group has fallen. This was the same group that killed Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, President Premadasa and are responsible for so many assassinations, the mosque massacres, violation of human rights, hostage taking and recruiting of child soldiers. What I don't understand is the west trying to stop preventing the army from taking control from these terrorists and rescuing the Tamil civilians from the LTTE while they go around killing people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Vietnam and many more. WAR is BAD. The sad truth is some blood is shed to win peace. Lets hope that peace lasts forever. Long live Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan People, the Sinhalese, the Tamils, the Vedhas, the Muslims, the Moors and the Burghers.

30. Sad future for the western world

Little does the western world know the fate that will befall it. Much of the Tamil diaspora, now left with the reality of finding peace in Sri Lanka finally setting in, will find itself in a predicament of not knowing when they'll be 'shipped' back when they lose their refugee status (except for those who have been fortunate to gain citizenship in their respective countries of domicile.) With the inevitable reconciliation and granting of governing rights through devolution etc. by the Rajapksa governmenent, the West is finally going to have to 'eat its words' and grant the fact that the whole 'Tamil Issue' had been blown totally out of proportion by the media and the financial beneficiaries of the LTTE movement, and give in to pressure to send the 'excess' immigrants back to ther country of origin. No wonder the Tamils are agitating in the West since they know their days are numbered. Their not agitating because of their love for the Tamil civilians caught in the middle of the

The SL army did this at the loss of lot of men from the forces, unlike how the west fights in Iraq and Afghanistan these are close quarter face to face fighting. 32. learn from a victim of this war

hi, i was in this war about 10 years ago. and escaped with minimal injury ( mental torture). lost my family members, friends, and neighbors. I don't believe end of this war will bring any peace to the Tamil citizens because they are fueled with anger and they know who killed their families and who tried to help. I seen it and experienced it when i was in the war zone. if one country commits war crime, it doesnt give another country the rights to commit the same crime and get away with it. Srilankan government and the Rebels have to face the consequences for taking many lives and violating the international law. So many times many people tried to have a peace talk but neither group agreed. the government who is suppose follow certain rules couldve done so much more to avoid these casualties of innocent Tamils. 33. LTTE are terrorist

Finally Sri Lankans as one nation defeated terrorism in the country. First of all, western media, do not try to create ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka. Its not the Tamils who has been defeated, it's the LTTE terrorist. It is a known fact that the LTTE is NOT the sole representatives of the Tamil people. 65% of the Tamils live with the majority of the Sinhalese. Prabakaran was good at creating ethnic cleansing, hence issues arise with the SInhalese/Muslims/others vs Tamils. Been Tamil, we are glad that the LTTE is over, however, it is a must that their propaganda machines are stopped to ensure total freedom to the Tamil people. LTTE is a terrorist outfit that would do anything to destroy races. Now Interpol, do your job and track down KP, the arms smuggler!

This war has been going on for so long. As a Sri Lankan I'm finally so glad it's over. You can talk about Tamil people not getting equal rights, but how much of these so called "rights" was their leader allowing them? Can you actually say that innocent tamil children got a "right" to an education? "right" to a family? "right" to proper living conditions? It's a major misconception in the international community that the government is killing civilians, which is far from the truth. The Sri Lankan government has rescued these poor people from these terrorists and trying to give them a new start to their lives. I think it's time that we all forget these stupid racial prejudices. Most of the worlds war crimes are committed by US and UK (who is just the tail of the dog). There is enough evidence of such crimes in Vietnam, Afgnistan, Sudan, and Iraq. One of the only modern day torture chambers was maintain by USA in Guantanamo Bay. I really wonder the real moral justification of these countries to accuse other countries for doing lesser crimes. World is fast changing in the next 25-40 years these countries will have to answer to the world when the next two super powers (India & china ) start flexing their mussel.

50. In Sri Lanka, a 'Final Push' to Defeat Rebels

The government of Sri Lanka is elected by the people of Sri Lanka for the people of Sri Lanka. It has the right to defend it self from terrorism just as any other elected government. In any war it is the bystanders that suffer the most, just as the civilians in Afganistan. If the government let the terrorists get away, like it had on many occasions in the past, a few civillians will be saved, but many thousands will be killed in the long run.
