Jobs and the Slow Road to Economic Recovery

28 May 2009

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.

The National Association for Business Economics has its latest predictions for the American economy. Most of the forty-five business economists questioned said they expect the recession to end in the second half of the year. But they also expect a slower-than-usual recovery.

Still, there were more signs this week that Americans are feeling better about the economy. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index had its biggest jump in six years in May.

The National Association of Realtors reported that sales of existing homes rose about three percent from March to April. The Commerce Department said sales of new single-family houses also rose -- but just by three-tenths of one percent.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency said home prices fell seven percent in the first three months of the year. But that was less than they fell at the end of two thousand eight compared to a year earlier.

Housing recoveries usually follow employment recoveries. Experts say job losses might slow later this year, but the unemployment rate could rise until the middle of next year.

Job losses help explain the latest numbers from the Mortgage Bankers Association. By the end of March, twelve percent of homeowners with a mortgage were late on loan payments or in the process of losing their home. California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada drove up the national numbers.

Pete Kyle is a University of Maryland finance professor. He agrees that the economy should begin to grow again in the second half of the year. But because of job conditions, he says, the recovery is "not going to feel like a recovery to the average person."

Unemployment was almost nine percent in April, the highest since the early eighties. High unemployment reduces spending which slows recovery. Professor Kyle also points to a weak property market, both for housing and businesses.

But what really set this economic downturn apart from others, he says, was the severity of the banking crisis. Many banks, he says, are going to need additional capital to deal with bad loans and heavy debt.

Heavy government debt only adds to unease about the future after the so-called Great Recession.

But President Obama says "we have stepped back from the brink." He says there is now some calm that did not exist before. But he also says Americans cannot return to a "borrow-and-spend economy."

And that's the VOA Special English Economics Report, written by Mario Ritter. I'm Steve Ember.

3. job

Nowadays it is not easy for one to find a job, especially an ideal job. Job has been a great concern for most Chinese parents and their children who have taken College Entrance Examination. They often take into first consideration whether the kids will find a well-paid job after their finish studying in a certain field or not. Many students are concerned about if their major learning will benefit them in their future job hunting. So job hunting has been a big problem in the country.

I have lost my job on the begining of this year. Till today, have not found a proper job that suit me. Terrible crisis. During pasted 5 months, I have found 6 companys who want me to work. I have worked in 2 companies, both only around 20days. They said I am not the right person, and dismissed me agin and agin. I know because of the high unemplyment, there are many more person waiting for one job. The other 4 company only pay me a lower salary that I really can not accept. I hope this is my own story. Hope jobs can come early.

5. Hope for a quicker recovery

Economic crisis has occured in much of the world, especially in the States. However, it is my belief that we will together try to stop it by working harder than usual. Only in that way can we step back from the brink. What the US President Obama says is just words od consolation. We must work twice as hard in order to make ends meet.

6. Even though being good news I am not so optimist

I believe there are lots of things to do before saying the situation will be better in the second half of this year. I hope I am actually wrong. As I see it the level of uncertainties is still great. Sooner or later new companies will go to bankruptcy like GM and news post jobs will be cut. Brazil is passing through a good moment, but I am not so sure about our future here.

11. Recovering Matter

I think rite now what people need are job, food, health and secuirty. They dong actually need to buy a new house, new car, new expensive close, jewelery or something. Neither, luxery things, society. I think the hight class businesses are not so good in this moment, US should run a normal class business, something u called sustainable business process at home, waiting for the the recovery. I dun mean u guys abandone the high class business but just give proirity to the normal class busines. As, I can say u sell the shell the place that they need them. :)

13. Job security

The financial crisis this time is globally compared with the financial crisis in 1997 was only in Asian country. The impact to Hong Kong, theoretically, must bigger and deeper. However, the unemployment rate this time is much less than the one in 1997, it is because our government understand that the most important thing to deal with the financial crisis is ensure the employment opportunity, our government offer a loan guarantee fund for those small and medium enterprise to cope with financial difficulty, helping them to pass throuth the crisis and avoid closing the company. If people are fear about their job security, less people are willing to spend money to buy things, the internal consumption market will collapse, it will result a series of bad chain effects.

14. A hard mission for president Obama and his administraion

In my opinion, the economy of the United State is so difficult to recovery. In latest news, the biggest manufacturer of cars industry of your country will go to bankrupt. This situation will hurt unemployment rate in the second half of the year. I think The United State will has a hard year for recovering economy. But i believe on President Obama and his administration, they will saves the United State.
