Words and Their Stories: Pulling a Fast One

17 July 2009

Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.

(MUSIC)

Today I will tell about expressions using numbers. Let us start with the number one. Numbers can be tricky. On the one hand, they are simply numbers. On the other hand, they have meanings. I for one use these expressions a lot.

Many people consider themselves number one, the most important person. They are always looking out for number one and taking care of number one. It is as if they are the one and only person on Earth. Some people however, are not so self-centered. My brother is such a person. It is true – no joke. I am not trying to pull a fast one on you.

First, you have to understand that my brother is one in a million. He is such a nice person. All his friends like him. They consider him one of the boys. Recently, my brother had a bad day at the office. It was just one of those days. Nothing went right. So he stopped at a local bar -- a drinking place -- after leaving work. My brother planned to have a glass of beer with his friends -- a quick one – before he went home. But a quick one turned into one or two, and soon those became one too many.

As my brother was leaving, he ordered a last drink -- one for the road. His friends became concerned. One by one, they asked him if he was able to drive home safely.

Now my brother is a wise and calm person. He is at one with himself. He recognizes when he has had too much alcohol to drink. So he accepted an offer for a ride home from a female friend.

At one time in the past, my brother had been in love with this woman. She is a great person -- kind, thoughtful and intelligent -- all good qualities rolled up into one. But sadly their relationship did not work. He always used to say "One of these days, I am going to marry this girl." But that never happened.

For one thing, she did not love him as much as he loved her. It was just one of those things. The situation was regrettable and my brother had to accept it. But even now, he considers her the one that got away.

However, they are still friends. And because my brother had been kind to her, she felt that one good turn deserves another. He was good to her and she wanted to help him in return. So she drove him home.

If my brother had driven home from the bar that night, his number would have been up. Something bad would have happened. Thankfully he made it home safely. And, he and the woman are back to square one. They are back to where they started – being friends.

Comments:

1. Interesting use of the work Number one

In my country, people do not like about the VIP - the number one person so much. Thus, it is so interesting when I can know how to use number one in some other phases. Thank you so much. I hope to use English better if I keep on learning the program "Words and their stories" from "Special English"

5. Isn't this too much?

When I tutored Mr. Wang, a wonderful student, he had much to learn. I might have used 3 or 4 idioms at one time. This packed approach would have overwhelmed him.

6.

Do you permit me to have my say? Jill Moss is a wonderfully skilful program writer, but I think that his texts are stuffed to bursting with words and expressions which, instead should be explained slowly, clearly and carefully. I miss the texts of the unforgettable Mrs. Marilyn Rice Christiano. They contained only few, well explained words and expression per program.

10. How Interesting!

Thank you so much for your article! On the one hand, the stories relating to the words are so interesting that I just do not want to stop! I have reviewed what I have learned in the past and have learnt something new. It is a very good experience. On the other, it reconfirms my understanding that learning a foreign language, let alone being in command of it, is really a long way to go. As it goes: "Art is long, life is short" . So I will work harder on it. And I do believ that I will make it better and better, day by day, with the help of your VOA programs. Thank all your VOA guys!

14. Idioms

Hello VOA Team, Thanks for your help with improving my second language by all the diversity subjects which are spoken in a very understandable way. Indeed, I've to admit by the other comments No 3 & 4 & 9: some idioms are difficult to comprehend for a non-native speaker and not always to find in the dictionary either. It would be easier to get a few words more explanations about the meaning of it. Nice day!

18. comments

hello, thank you for your interesting program. i enjoyed it, but in my opinion, you should add explanations of some expressions, maybe at the end of the transcript. for instance, i didn't understand what "pulling the fast one" means. in addition i would like to ask you one important question. i need to study an unformal english in order to understand other people (my lecturers at college the next year). do you think your programs are good to this purpose or not? maybe you could recommend me something else? thank you for your answer julia

19. Idioms

To be honest, most of English idioms are too difficult and complicated for me to understand, especially phrasal verbs. But I feel that my English is getting better day by day through theVOAspecialenglish.com. I really appreciate you.

25. many youngers thinks themself number on

today there are too many younger feel they r number one ,but in reality they r not so good and important,it's just they lack social experience and feel too good for themself.young people should learn more and don't pay too much importance on themself.it will do them good in the future.
