Making a Difference: Tanya Pinto

09 August 2009

This is the VOA Special English Development Report:

In two thousand five, Tanya Pinto was a successful young businesswoman in Dallas, Texas. But she decided to take three months off from work at an advertising company to visit her birthplace, India.

She volunteered at Mother Teresa's home for orphans in Kolkata. She also traveled, and saw children in great need.

TANYA PINTO: "And that experience was life changing. And that's why I decided to start a charity."

She returned to her job in Texas and began Baal Dan Charities. In Hindi, the name means "child donation."

India has an estimated eighteen million poor children. Some charity workers say the conditions on the streets are, if anything, worse than those shown in the film "Slumdog Millionaire." Many children depend on international charity projects like Baal Dan.

At first, Baal Dan provided street children with clothes. Today, the organization gives money to orphanages, schools and local projects. The money provides food, medicine, schoolbooks and some education. The work is centered in Kolkata, Hyderabad and Kerala province.

Tanya Pinto started her project with small donations from friends and co-workers.

TANYA PINTO: "I would pass them in the hallway and they would say, 'Hey, the next time you go back to India, here is twenty dollars, here is fifty dollars, here is ten dollars for the children.'"

Today, Baal Dan has other financial supporters in the United States. People organize events to raise money. A restaurant in Dallas donates money whenever anyone orders "Tacos for a Cause."

In the next several years, Tanya Pinto hopes to begin sponsoring an orphanage. She visits India as often as she can while working full-time at the advertising company. Her last trip was in May.

TANYA PINTO: "I will take the children on an outing as well. I will take them to the zoo or to the park. And so I'll do things that are really fun activities, because these are children who are living in unimaginable poverty. So I like to bring some fun into their lives."

She talks about a trip when she visited a care center operated by a local group that her charity has helped. Two boys recognized her. They had met her at a shelter at a railway station the year before. The children, she says, were rescued from the streets and were doing well.

Tanya Pinto says you do not have to be wealthy or well known to help others.

TANYA PINTO: "Even if you are not a celebrity, if you are not rich, if you are not famous, you can do something to help make this world a better place."

3. Good actions start from good mind

I appreciate Mrs. TANYA PINTO very much according to her sacrifice to the poor children in India. She inspires me to start doing something to change our beloved world to be a better place for living . She also taught me that it is not matter we are big one or small one , we can do good thing in everyday to help other people, to protect our environment, to save energy . I always remind myself that all of good activity I did for others. It meant that I was cleaning up the world and cleaning up my mind in the same time.

6. Dedicated lady to help her own country

I think this kind of problems is not only happening in India, but around the world, but different in levels. I am really amazed by her volunteery activities to help people, especially the vulnerable children. Imaged, if more and more children in the world, especially developing countries, encounter problems and can not get access to education, better living conditions, health care and sanitation, what will the world be? In this globalized world, such an activity is highly needed to make the world the properous place to live in. She's right that every person can give out their contributions regardless of wealth, however, at times wealth can be of great help and bring a lot of things possible. Like one viewpoint stated "You CANNOT feed the world while you are being hungry". All in all, I really appreciate her viewpoints and encourage her to act more. Thanks

7.

It's very nice to know that there are people who give their time and money to share with others. In spite of we're still having our own needs, smart persons as a Tanya show us the real value of the life: Time to work, time to receive, time to give, time to love......... time to do good things.

8. Let's think of this

I think giving money to poor people is just the short-term solution. In order to edge out the poverty, we need the help of major organizations and the government. We should give them training and then jobs so that they can earn for their own keep. Because if we just give them money and food, then after using all of them, they are still poor and hungry and need our help again. So we should think of some long-term solutions.

11. The differences between China and the US

I 'm a catholic .People in china used to be kind and generous to each other.but with time goes by,people are getting more colder than before.they value someone who are rich or powerful. majority people don't feel happier and more content than before .we are rich in money but empty in thoughts. To spread jesus christ is the only way to save my nation and reduce poverty.I hope we have a satisfying society in the future.May God bless China.

17. Tanya Pinto has a big heart!!!

really has a big heart. What she has done for her country is praiseworthy. I admire her too much. Although, she is now living and working in another country, her mind and her heart are always toward her country. What she has done for the children in India today not only help them overcome the hunger or coldness but also help them realize the value of life and know how to live a good life. She is a good example for children to follow. When they grow up, they will help other children who are in the situation as they used to be. Children are the future of the country. Helping children means to invest in the development of the country, indeed...
