About Us

The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is an international multimedia broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of 125 million people.

The VOA Tibetan Service was created by an Act of Congress signed into law on February 16, 1990 to established “a service to provide Voice of America Tibetan language programming to the people of Tibet.”

The Voice of America Tibetan Service broadcasts began in March 1991 to meet the need of the Tibetan population for uncensored news and information about events in their own area, in the rest of China, and around the world.

The Voice of America Tibetan Service began with a 15-minute daily broadcast on short-wave radio.  Today, the VOA Tibetan service broadcasts two hours of original television programming each week, and 42 hours of radio. The programs are broadcast on shortwave, transmitted via satellite, and streamed on it's Tibetan language and English language website.

The Tibetan Service adheres strictly to the VOA charter, which requires that the news be presented in an accurate, objective, and comprehensive manner.
