First Food for Babies

In the west, most babies are given solid food after four months. However,Tibetans traditionally give babies solid food earlier. Dr. Ragdo Lobsang Tenzin says babies in Tibet would be given a small piece of ghee at their birth. The Western health advisers suggest to wait until babies are four to six months old before introducing to solid food.

Benefits of Breast Feeding

A new study has found that babies who were formula-fed and introduced to solid foods before they reached 4 months old were "more likely" to be obese at the age of 3. The study found that for children who were breast-fed, the timing of introducing solid food did not increase the odds of becoming obese later. The breast milk reduce various infectious diseases for children as it contains most essential nutrients that factories are unable to produce. Breast feeding benefits the mother's health, including lowering the risk of getting breast cancer and increasing self confidence, the study said.

Heavy Beer Drinkers at Higher Risk for Stomach Cancer

Heavy beer drinkers have an increased risk of gastric cancer, especially if they have a certain gene variant, a new study says. Dr. Yangbum Gyal says that the Tibetan doctors had always known that drinking alcohol was linked to stomach cancer. One New York based Western medical doctor also admitted that beer drinking had always been suspected to have links to stomach cancer, although no scientific evidence have been found yet.

Cell Phone May Cause Brain Cancer

Many cautious people have been using wired earpieces when operating their cell phones because of the concerns that it might be harmful to their health. The World Health Organization have recently warmed that cell phone use many increase the risk for "glioma," a type of brain cancer. Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN concluded that the children's health is particularly vulnerable to the radiation. The CNN report also pointed out that the manufacturers have already warned consumers not to keep the cell phones too close to their ears. Yet there is still no complete evidence that there is a relation with cell phone and cancer. However, experts say cancers development takes long time and it has been only 20 years since the cell phone is widely used.
