Iraq Officials Condemn Killing of Saddam Trial Defense Lawyer

21-10-2005

The Iraqi government has condemned the killing of a defense lawyer in the trial of deposed leader Saddam Hussein.

Government officials reacted to the assassination of Saadoun al-Janabi, who was found dead from gunshot wounds on Friday in Baghdad. Gunmen seized him late Thursday from his office.

Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa met Friday with Sunni Arab religious leaders in Baghdad -- his first visit to Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion two years ago.

Mr. Moussa said he wants to promote a national reconciliation dialogue in Iraq. Some Sunni Arab leaders say any talks depend on certain conditions, among them a timetable for the withdrawal of coalition troops from Iraq.

Also, reports on Friday quoted election officials as saying they expect to announce the results of last Saturday's constitutional referendum within one to two days.
