Đây là Chương Trình Anh  Ngữ Sinh Ðộng New Dynamic English bài 127. Phạm Văn xin kính chào quí vị thính giả.  Trong  phần mở  đầu, quí vị luyện nghe hiểu bằng cách nghe một câu hỏi, rồi nghe một mẩu đàm thoại trong đó có câu trả lời; sau đó nghe lại câu hỏi và trả lời, rồi khi nghe câu trả lời đúng, xin lập lại. Robots=người máy, máy điện tử thay người.

Ôn lại: Ông Stewart Chapman, Phó Chủ tịch  điều hành công ty  Federal Motors,  cho biết hãng ông sản xuất xe  vận tải và xe  du lịch (trucks and passenger cars); và  những năm qua hãng  ông thành công ở Âu châu –We’ve done quite well in Europe over  the years. Eliz:  Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton.

  Today, our e mail question is “Why are Americans in business so crazy about the Internet?”

Gary: Well, I would say that there are two main reasons.

 First, people use the Internet to send e mail.

 Using e mail is much cheaper and more convenient than regular mail.

Eliz: Right!  You don’t have to print a letter, put it into an envelope, and mail it.

Gary: And you don’t have to pay for postage.

 So you save time and money.

Eliz: What’s the second reason?

Gary: The second reason Americans love the Internet is the amount of information on the World Wide Web.

 Websites provide the newest information about business products and services.

 That’s why more and more people go to company websites for information.

 It’s easier than trying to find a trade journal with the same information.

Eliz: It sounds as if companies can work more cheaply and quickly by using the Internet!

Gary: That’s it exactly!

Eliz: Thanks for your information, Gary.

Sau đó Henry dùng  câu Why don’t you …Why  don’t you have  a seat here in my office?  Xin mời cô ngồi ghế trong văn phòng  tôi.  Nếu muốn trịnh trọng hơn, ta dùng “Please have a seat.”   Hãy  nghe hai câu, câu thứ nhất có ý thân mật, “I’ll get something  for us to drink, if you’d like. Gary: Hello, Elizabeth!   Today I’ll be talking about greetings.

 In today’s Business Dialog, Henry Martin welcomes Alice Martinez.

In this situation, Henry and Alice use first names because they have already established a friendly relationship over the phone.

Henry: Alice!  Welcome to Martin Electronics!

 I’m Henry Martin.

Alice: Henry, I’m very pleased to meet you finally.

Gary: Notice that Alice says “I’m very pleased to meet you” even though they have already talked on the phone.

 This is because they are meeting in person for the first time.

 Then Henry suggests that Alice sit down and he offers to get her something to drink.

 Henry uses the expression “Why don’t you...” to make his suggestion.

Henry: Well, why don’t you have a seat here in my office?

 I’ll get us something to drink, if you’d like.

 What would you like?

Alice: I’d love some coffee.

Gary: Alice and Henry are friendly with each other and their language is polite and a little informal.

 Now listen to this variation, which uses more formal language:

Henry: Please have a seat.

 Would you care for something to drink?

Alice: Yes, thank you.  Coffee, please.

Gary: In this case, the expression “would you care for” is more formal than “would you like.”

 The word “please” also  makes this conversation seem more formal.
