Experts say more than two-thirds of the population in sub-Saharan Africa lives without power. In June, President Barack Obama announced his Power Africa initiative, a plan to spend seven billion dollars over the next five years to dramatically increase access to power in the region. But many critics say the US is lagging behind China which has already invested tens of billions of dollars on power projects on the energy deficient continent.
