Sudan Armed Forces Capture Key Border Town


THE SUDAN ARMED FORCES, OR S-A-F, SAYS ITS TROOPS HAVE CAPTURED THE KEY BORDER TOWN OF KURMUK IN BLUE NILE STATE AFTER HEAVY FIGHTING WITH THE SUDAN PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY NORTHERN SECTOR. A STATEMENT RELEASED BY S-A-F SAYS ITS FORCES ARE NOW IN CONTROL OF THE ONE TIME SPLA NORTH STRONGHOLD AND REBEL FORCES LED BY MALIK AGAR HAVE FLED THE TOWN LEAVING BEHIND EQUIPMENT AND WEAPONS. SPLM NORTH SECRETARY GENERAL YAASIR ARMAN CONFIRMS THE ATTACK ON KURMUK AND SAYS HIS FORCES WITHDREW FROM THE TOWN FOR WHAT HE CALLS ‘’STRATEGIC REASONS’’. ARMAN SAYS THE FIGHTING HAS DISPLACED THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS WHO ARE CROSSING INTO ETHIOPIA. I SPOKE WITH ARMAN THIS AFTERNOON TO GET THE LATEST ON THE FIGHTING.
