10-01-13 DBA BUTTY - CAMEROON ELECTION - OPPOSITION

THE LONG-TIME LEADER OF CAMEROON’S MAIN OPPOSITION IS DENYING THAT HIS PARTY TOOK PART IN MONDAY’S LEGISLATIVE AND LOCAL ELECTIONS TO LEGITIMIZE PRESIDENT PAUL BIYA’S RULING CAMEROON PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT PARTY’S MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT. INSTEAD JOHN FRU NDI OF THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC FRONT PARTY SAYS HE DECIDED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTIONS TO CONTINUE FROM WITHIN HIS FIGHT FOR LAWS THAT GUARANTEE FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS IN CAMEROON. THE OPPOSITION HAS REGULARLY ACCUSED PRESIDENT BIYA’S PARTY OF ELECTORAL FRAUD. BUT FRU NDI TELLS ME THAT MONDAY’S ELECTION WAS AN IMPROVEMENT OVER PREVIOUS ELECTIONS EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SOME IRREGULARITIES.
