The 2004 U.S. presidential election drew more American voters than any national poll since in 40 years.
At last count, more than 114 million voters cast ballots in Tuesday's election. That is about 60 percent of people who are eligible to vote in the United States.
Just over 51 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the previous presidential election, in 2000. Tuesday's turnout was the highest since the early 1960s.
Exit polls showed Mr. Bush won re-election in part by getting a large turnout of conservative Christian voters who support his stands against gay marriage and abortion. Eleven states passed a ban against gay marriage in Tuesday's election.
