Chile has nominated Interior Minister Jose Miguel Insulza to become the next Secretary General of the Organization of American States.
In Santiago Friday, government officials said the nomination of Mr. Insulza demonstrates Chile's commitment to promoting democracy and human rights in the region.
Aside from Mr. Insulza, there are other candidates vying for the post left vacant by Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the former Costa Rican president who resigned as in October due to a corruption scandal.
Last Tuesday, Mexican President Vicente Fox nominated his Foreign Secretary, Luis Ernesto Derbez, for the top OAS post. Another person being considered is former Salvadoran President Francisco Flores.
The Bush administration says it is waiting for a consensus candidate from Central America, preferably a former president, to fill the job.
The 34 members of the OAS elect the hemispheric body's leader.
