The controversial chairman of the Federal Communications Commission FCC, Michael Powell, has announced he is going to resign.
In Washington Friday, Mr. Powell said he would step down after the commission's March meeting. He said he was satisfied he had largely completed the agenda he set when President Bush appointed him chairman in 2001.
Mr. Powell is best known for his strong drive to deregulate the telecommunications industry. Some consumer groups have criticized him for attempts to allow large media companies to grow even larger.
He also came under fire for the FCC's decision to slap CBS with a $550,000 fine for indecency. The network had aired a brief glimpse of pop singer Janet Jackson's breast during a dance routine at last year's Super Bowl football game.
Mr. Powell is the son of retiring Secretary of State Colin Powell.
