Cuba Bans Smoking in Public Places

Cuba has imposed an island-wide ban on smoking in public places.

The ban came into effect Monday and prohibits tobacco smoking in stores, theaters and office buildings. Restaurants are also setting up "no smoking" sections.

Cuba says it wants to change the attitude of its citizens towards smoking. Nearly half of Cuba's adult population smokes.

However, reports from Cuba say many people seem unaware of the new ban.

Cuba, the home of some of the world's finest cigars, relies heavily on tobacco product exports to support its economy.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro - once an avid cigar-smoker - gave up smoking years ago.
