Liberia Elections Set for October 11

Liberia's electoral commission says the country's first elections in 14 years will be held on October 11.

Commission chairman Frances Johnson Morris announced the date for the presidential and parliamentary vote Monday.

Dozens of possible candidates are expected to compete for the presidency, including former football (soccer) star George Weah.

The vote is expected to close a transition period following a 2003 deal that ended almost 14 years of non-stop civil war in Liberia.
