Former Argentine President Carlos Menem is planning to run for a Senate seat in his native La Rioja province. His brother Eduardo Menem, already a senator, announced the move Tuesday, saying Argentina would benefit from the former president's political experience.
In December, Carlos Menem returned to Argentina from a self-imposed exile in Chile and pledged to make a political comeback. He had been living in Chile with his wife and son, out of the reach of arrest warrants on charges of corruption. Those warrants were eventually withdrawn.
Mr. Menem was Argentina's president from 1989 to 1999.
The 74-year-old former leader has said he would like to run for president again in 2007.
