Yemeni Court Jails Six al-Qaida Suspects

update

A Yemeni court has handed down a two-year jail term for each of six suspected al-Qaida militants for forging travel documents.

In its ruling Monday, the court in Sanaa acquitted five others arrested in the same case.

All 11 men were also acquitted of initial charges of plotting to carry out armed attacks in Yemen.

The men, all Yemeni nationals, but some born in Saudi Arabia, were among 14 people detained for alleged links to militant attacks.

Three were released because of lack of evidence before the trial began in February.

A separate trial is under way for eight other al-Qaida suspects.

Yemen has cracked down on suspected militants since the September, 2001 attacks in the United States. Yemen has captured and sentenced several al-Qaida suspects, including those behind the 2000 suicide bombing of the U.S. destroyer Cole.
