Michelle Gonsalves, of Bonhams and Butterfields in London, adjusts the Dorothy dress worn by Judy Garland from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz at Bonhams and Butterfields in San Francisco
The simple blue and white gingham dress worn by actress Judy Garland in the classic film The Wizard of Oz has been sold at auction for more than $250,000.

An unknown buyer, bidding by telephone, purchased the dress at the sale conducted by London's Bonhams Galleries, which had estimated its pre-auction value at about $63,000.

Judy Garland was 17 when she played the character of Dorothy in the 1939 film about a young girl and her dog whisked from the U.S. midwest into a magical fairytale kingdom.

The chief of the collector's department at Bonhams, Jon Braddeley, described the dress as representing the quintessential magic of childhood in the most beloved film of the 20th century.
