Pettachi Wins Giro's 12th Stage; Basso in Pink

Italian cyclist Alessandro Pettachi has won the 12th stage of the Tour of Italy in a mass sprint finish, but Ivan Basso remains the overall leader.

Pettachi finished the 178-kilometer ride in 4:50 hours, just ahead of Paride Grillo of Italy and Isaac Galvez Lopez of Spain. The first 117 riders were all credited with the same time.

Ivan Basso crossed the line in 33rd place with the main pack of riders and remains the overall leader, 0:18 ahead of Paolo Savoldelli of Italy. Danilo Di Luca of Italy is third overall, 1:04 behind the leader.

Saturday's 13th stage is a 218-kilometer mountainous ride from Mezzocorona to Ortisei, including several tough climbs. The race heads for its highest climb, the 2,758-meter Stelvio pass on Sunday. The Tour ends May 29 in Milan.
