OAS Head Meets with Nicaragua Leaders on Political Crisis

The head of the Organization of American States (OAS) has met with Nicaraguan President Enrique Bolaños in an effort to solve the nation's political crisis.

Jose Miguel Insulza
OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza met Thursday in Managua with Mr. Bolaños and other Nicaraguan officials.

Meanwhile, supporters and opponents of the president held separate, peaceful demonstrations in the capital.

President Bolaños had requested the help of the new OAS chief, as some Nicaraguan lawmakers called on the president to resign. Mr. Bolaños says opposition groups, which control Congress, have violated the constitution by approving reforms that limit the president's powers.

Mr. Insulza plans to meet with opposition lawmakers and others in an effort to start a dialogue between the two sides.
