Indonesian Court Rejects Civil Case Against US Gold Miner's Subsidiary

An Indonesian court has thrown out a government civil suit against a U.S. mining operator's local subsidiary for alleged environmental pollution.

The court said Tuesday that it has no authority to try the case filed by the government earlier this year against P.T. Newmont Minahasa Raya.

The suit was seeking damages for the alleged pollution of a bay off northern Sulawesi Island.

Tuesday's ruling will have no impact on the ongoing criminal trial of Newmont Mining's top local executive on charges stemming from the same allegations.

The operation is owned by U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corporation, the world's biggest gold producer.
