Drugs Found in Office of Top Guatemalan Anti-Drug Cop

Police in Guatemala say they have found packages of cocaine and more than $20,000 in cash in the office of the country's top anti-drug police officer.

The discovery follows the arrest of Adan Castillo and two of his deputies in the United States on Tuesday. The men have been charged with conspiring to import and distribute cocaine within U.S. borders.

U.S. officials had lured the Guatemalans to the United States under the guise of a training program. In fact, U.S. and Guatemalan officials had been investigating the officers for four months.

At a news conference Wednesday, Guatemalan President Oscar Berger said U.S. and Guatemalan officials are working closely together on anti-drug efforts. He said he would ask Guatemalan lawmakers for a three-year extension of the joint program, known as Maya-Jaguar.
