Jamaica Set for Ruling Party Elections on Saturday

update

Nearly 4,000 delegates of Jamaica's ruling People's National Party are descending on the capital to elect a new leader who will become the next Prime Minister.

The internal party election will be held Saturday at Jamaica College in Kingston, where delegates will choose among four candidates for the position.

Polls show local government minister Portia Simpson Miller and national security minister Peter Phillips leading the race.

Finance Minister Omar Davies and Karl Blyth, a former water and housing minister are also running.

Since the PNP holds a majority of seats in parliament, the winner will take over the country's leadership when Prime Minister PJ Patterson resigns at the end of March, after 14 years in office.
