UN Mediator Holds Talks in Serbia on Kosovo

The United Nations mediator for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, has met with top officials in Belgrade for talks on the future of the Serbian province.

The discussions with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica Tuesday come one week after the first round of international talks on the future of Kosovo.

The U.N.-sponsored talks in Vienna are set to resume March 17 in an effort to set the guidelines for negotiations on resolving the status of the province.

Meanwhile, the top U.N. official in Kosovo, Soren Jessen-Petersen, expressed confidence that the talks will lead to a resolution by the end of the year.

He also said he met NATO officials in Brussels who have promised to ensure security for the ethnic Serbian minority in Kosovo throughout status talks.

The region's ethnic Albanian majority is pressing for independence from Serbia -- a demand Serbs strongly oppose.
