Hollywood actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have welcomed their first child into the world.
A spokesman for the couple say Holmes gave birth to a baby girl Tuesday in Los Angeles. The child, who has been named Suri, weighed 3.4 kilograms and measured 51 centimeters long. The baby's name has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or Persian, meaning "red rose."
Both mother and child are doing well.
The actors have have been the subject of worldwide attention ever since the 43-year-old Cruise excitedly proclaimed his love for the 27-year-old Holmes during a television appearance with popular talk show host Oprah Winfrey last May. Tabloid reporters have nicknamed them "TomKat" and the child "TomKitten."
The impending birth of their child also became a source of mockery after Cruise said Holmes would undergo a "silent birth" procedure as prescribed by the Church of Scientology.
Cruise has two older children from his marriage to Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman.
