A new foundation has been established to give Africans a greater say in their own development.
The project, called Trust Africa, became fully independent Tuesday with a $30-million grant from the U.S. Ford Foundation.
Trust Africa had been operating for the past five years as part of the Ford foundation, but will now be run independently out of Senegal with an all-African board of directors.
The project's executive director Akwasi Aidoo told VOA the foundation's aim is to allow Africans across the continent to share their ideas and expertise with one another.
He said the new foundation will focus on conflict resolution, trade, and increasing democracy in Africa.
