In Zaragoza, Spain, world number 14 Francesca Schiavone of Italy beat Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, 6-4, 7-5. Earlier, Flavia Pennetta of Italy scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anabel Medina-Garrigues.
Meanwhile in Ostend, host Belgium took a 2-0 lead over the United States in their best-of-five match series. Kirsten Flipkens beat American Jill Craybas in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Kim Clijsters also took three sets to win the second singles match over American Jamea Jackson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The U.S. team is without star players Lindsay Davenport and the Williams sisters.
The reverse singles matches and the doubles are Sunday. The winners this week meet in the Fed Cup finals beginning September 16.
