Croatian Judge Rejects Arrest Order for Parliamentarian

A Croatian court has rejected a prosecutor's request to detain a prominent parliamentarian accused of war crimes.

Prosecutors had demanded the arrest of opposition lawmaker Branimir Glavas, after he published confidential witness testimony against him on his website earlier this week.

But the judge handling the case denied the request Friday, and issued a gag order prohibiting both sides from releasing further details about the case.

Glavas is under investigation for alleged involvement in local Serbian deaths during Croatia's war for independence. The incidents took place in eastern Croatia, where he was a military commander.

After the war, Glavas became a senior member of Croatia's ruling party. He was expelled from the party last year, but retained his parliamentary seat.

Earlier this year, the parliament stripped Glavas of immunity from prosecution.
