Iran Test-Fires Short-Range Missiles as Part of Military Exercises

Iranian state media say Iran's army has test-fired several short-range missiles as part of a major military exercise that began Saturday.

Iranian television says the military tested a surface-to-surface missile called the Saegheh (which means lightning in Farsi) that has a range of 80 to 250 kilometers. The television report says the missile test took place Sunday in the Kashan desert.

Iran says the military drills will continue for several weeks in 14 of the country's 30 provinces.

Iran's army commander, General Ataollah Salehi, said Saturday his country must be ready for possible attacks by what he called Iran's "crazy" enemy. It was not clear whether he was referring to Israel, the United States or both.

Salehi said Iran's enemies have gone "crazy" after seeing the military capabilities of Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
