A new survey shows that nearly nine in 10 Spaniards believe too many illegal immigrants are arriving in their country.
Radio station Cadena Ser released the results of its poll Wednesday as officials on Spain's Canary Islands reported nearly 1,000 new arrivals over the previous 24 hours.
The islands off Africa's northwest coast have become the target destination for thousands of Africans trying to reach Europe and the prospect of better jobs and a better life.
More than 22,000 Africans have landed on the islands' shores so far this year, nearly five times the number who arrived in all of 2005.
Hundreds more are believe to have died in the rickety boats that set out from west African nations like Senegal and Mauritania each day.
The Spanish government has called on European and west African countries to help stop the flow of immigrants, so far without any noticeable effect.
The European Union has promised to send boats, but has also criticized Spain's government, which it says brought the problem on itself by granting amnesty to an estimated 600,000 illegal immigrants last year.
