Baseball Playoffs: Tigers, Cardinals Win

update

The Detroit Tigers are a win away from the Major League Baseball World Series after shutting out the Oakland Athletics, 3-0 to take a three games to none lead in the best of seven American League championship series.

In chilly weather in Detroit Friday, veteran pitcher Kenny Rogers dominated, limiting the A's to just two hits in more than seven innings on the mound.

His Tiger teammates scored two first-inning runs to put Oakland in an immediate hole. Craig Monroe later added a home run as Detroit snatched its sixth straight playoff win.

The Athletics must win the next two games in Detroit to send the series back to Oakland, while a loss will send them home for good. One more win, and Detroit heads to its first World Series appearance since 1984.

The National League Championship series is tied at a victory each after the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Mets in New York, 9-6. So Taguchi led off the ninth inning with a home run to start a three-run rally for the Cardinals.

St. Louis will host the next three games beginning late Friday.
