European Union Bans Two Airlines from Flying to EU Countries

The European Commission has banned a Ukrainian and an Iranian airline from flying to European Union countries because of safety concerns.

EU transport officials said Tuesday that Ukrainian Mediterranean Airlines and Iran's Mahan Air were barred after failing to meet EU safety regulations.

European Commission officials launched a probe of the two airlines after receiving notifications from EU member countries about safety problems.

The EU has an airline safety blacklist that is regularly updated based on the recommendations of aviation authorities. Airlines on the list are banned from flying to EU countries.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
