As many as 75 miners are missing and feared dead following heavy rains that flooded several mines in northeastern Tanzania Friday.
The flooding struck tanzanite mines in Mirerani, near the city of Arusha. Witnesses say six bodies have been recovered so far. They say search and rescue efforts continued into late Saturday.
Tanzanite is a shimmering blue or purple stone, used in jewelry, that is named after Tanzania, the only known source of the stones.
Miners typically extract the stones from relatively shallow pits that have few safety measures.
