Fire officials in San Diego say a U.S. military F-18 jet has crashed into a residential neighborhood in that southern California city, killing at least three people.
Television pictures from the site showed firefighters battling to put out a fire that destroyed at least two homes.
Officials said the three victims were inside one of the destroyed properties. One other person believed to be inside the home was still missing. The second house was believed to have been unoccupied.
The Marine Corps said the plane crashed as it prepared to land at the Corps' Air Station Miramar, about four kilometers away. It said the pilot ejected safely, parachuted into the branches of a tree, and was taken to a hospital.
The Marine Corps said the accident occurred when the pilot was returning from a training session on a Navy aircraft carrier off the California coast.
