Number of Cholera Cases in Zimbabwe Epidemic Tops 80,000 - WHO

The number of people stricken with cholera in Zimbabwe since last August topped 80,000 this week, the World Health Organization said on Friday, while the death toll mounted to 3,759 as of Thursday.

The United Nations agency singled out the Harare suburb of Budiriro and the Mashonaland Central town of Bindura as current hot spots as well as the districts of Mount Darwin, Chikomba, Kadoma, Makonde, Mutare and Nyanga.

Regional humanitarian advisor Zvidzai Maburutse of Britain’s ActionAid said the country was ill-prepared to meet the emergency given the collapse of the health system in late 2008.
