South Africa Reports First Swine Flu Death

South African officials are reporting the country's first death from the H1N1 "swine flu" virus.

Health officials say the victim was a male student at Stellenbosch University in Western Cape province. He died July 28 of cardiac arrest, several days after falling sick.

The student had been diagnosed with pneumonia but post-mortem testing found the cause of death to be swine flu.

South Africa health officials have confirmed more than 100 cases of H1N1 in the country this year.

The World Health Organization released its most recent report on the virus last week. It said there have been more than 134,000 cases worldwide, and at least 816 deaths.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP.
