Earnie Stewart, the U.S. national team's leading scorer in 2001, has been named player of the year by the American sports media.
An 11-year veteran of the U.S. national team, Earnie Stewart plays in Europe in the Dutch first division. He was named winner of the prestigious U.S. Honda trophy at a luncheon Wednesday.
He said, "It's great to be recognized as an individual in a team sport, I guess for every person, that's great. And for myself, it's such a great feeling to be amongst these guys that are on this trophy right here."
Past winners of U.S. soccer's Honda trophy include Cobi Jones, Eric Wynalda, and last year's winner, Claudio Reyna.
Earnie Stewart's coach in the Netherlands congratulated him by telephone, and told him to be home to play a game on Friday.
