A groundbreaking ceremony was held Sunday in Pineville, Louisiana for the new USA Boxing Center, a new training facility for young boxers.
Four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield was at the groundbreaking. Holyfield, who was on the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 1984 and the national team a year earlier, says the majority of U.S. boxers come from the southern United States. Holyfield says that fact makes the location in Louisiana perfect for the USA Boxing Center, which is scheduled to open in September.
The facility is being built on a 12.4 hectare location donated by Calvin Malone, co-owner of a fishing lures company and brother-in-law of Holyfield's trainer, Kenny Weldon.
