ZIMBABWE / EU - 2002-02-16

The Zimbabwean government is still locked in a stalemate with the European Union over its refusal to allow the head of the EU observer mission to monitor next month’s election. The government says Pierre Schori may only stay in the country as a tourist. The action has added to opposition fears that the electoral process is being rigged. As part of part of our continuing focus on the election, which is twenty-three days away, reporter Chinedu Offor spoke with the head of the Commonwealth Observer Mission, General Abdulsalami Abubakar. The former Nigerian head of state says the presence of his team on the ground may bring some credibility to the polls and encourage a large voter turn-out. He says the ongoing violence is not in the interest of the people or the government of Zimbabwe.
