Music News: Greatful Dead Reunion Concert Kicks Off; 'N Sync's Fatone to Star in <i>Rent</i> - 2002-08-03


On August 3 and 4, the Grateful Dead will perform its much-anticipated "Terrapin Station" reunion concerts in East Troy, Wisconsin. Joining original members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann on the tour are Jeff Chimenti, keyboardist in Weir's band Ratdog, and Rob Barraco and Jimmy Herring, members of the group Phil Lesh & Friends. The Grateful Dead plans to perform a 13-city tour later this year. Shows are scheduled to begin on November 14 in Roanoke, Virginia.

'N Sync member Joey Fatone will begin a 19-week run in the Broadway musical Rent on August 5. He'll play the role of Mark, a struggling video artist and the show's narrator. 25-year-old Fatone's previous acting experience includes appearances in the films On the Line and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced its 2002 honorees. Paul McCartney and conductor James Levine are on the list, along with actors James Earl Jones, Chita Rivera and Elizabeth Taylor. Secretary of State Colin Powell will present the 25th annual honors, which recognize lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts, on December 7. The following evening, President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush will host the honorees at the White House. Later that night, a gala performance will take place at the Kennedy Center's Opera House. CBS TV will tape the gala to air as a two-hour special in December.

On August 6, BMG Heritage Records will release the 2-CD set Sun Records 50th Anniversary. The 44-track compilation features songs by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and many others that recorded for the Sun label.

August 9 - The 2002 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards will be presented in Miami Beach, Florida. Usher leads the contenders with eight nominations for his latest album 8701 and its hit single U Got It Bad. Other multiple nominees include Ja Rule with six, Alicia Keys and the late Aaliyah with five, and Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z with four.

David Bowie is one of 12 nominees for this year's Mercury Music Prize. He earned the nomination for his latest album Heathen. The diverse list of nominees also includes the Bee Gees, Beverley Knight, Doves, the Streets, Electric Soft Parade, Miss Dynamite, Coral, hip-hop producer Roots Manuva, classical pianist Joanna MacGregor, jazz trumpeter Guy Barker and Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes. The winner of the Mercury Music Prize will be announced on September 19 in London.

LOOK WHO'S GOING ON TOUR!

August 7 - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band will kick off a two-year world tour in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The group will perform in 46 U.S. cities during the first leg of the tour. Also on the schedule are seven shows in Europe in mid-October. North American dates will continue in November and December. In early 2003, the group will perform throughout Europe and Australia, before returning to the U.S. for another series of North American concerts.
