Baseball: Rookie Bonderman Wins First Major League Game - 2003-04-24


In Major League Baseball action Wednesday, rookie Jeremy Bonderman won his first major league game as the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, for only their second win in 19 games this season.

Bonderman allowed only three hits in eight innings to outpitch Oakland starter and 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito. Craig Monroe homered for the Tigers, whose 2-17 record remains the worst in baseball.

In the National League, starting pitcher Al Leiter beat the Houston Astros for the first time in nearly five years as the New York Mets beat Houston, 4-2.

Raul Gonzalez, who was brought up from the minor leagues earlier in the day, homered for the Mets in his first at-bat.
