The International Olympic Committee has started a three-day inspection visit to Greece to check on preparations for the Athens 2004 Summer Games. The delegation is being led by Denis Oswald, head of the IOC coordination commission, and Gilbert Felli, IOC sports director. The inspection is concentrating on venue construction, security, and management. Oswald has said Athens had overcome many delays but that much work remained to be done.
Construction delays have led organizers to reschedule several test events, but they have promised the IOC everything will be ready on time for the opening ceremony, including a new trolley line, several major road projects, two new football (soccer) stadiums and dozens of other sporting venues. The next full IOC coordination commission meeting is scheduled for October.
