Mexico Levels Charges at US Over Unfair Import Duties - 2003-08-19

Mexico has lodged a series of complaints with the World Trade Organization (WTO), saying the United States has been unfairly charging duties on some Mexican imports.

Mexico's ambassador to the WTO, Eduardo Perez Motta, told a meeting of the organization's dispute panel on Monday that for over 10 years the United States has been unfairly charging duties on imports of Mexican cement, oil equipment and steel plates.

Mr. Motta said he was seeking reimbursement from the United States for the duties on Mexican cement, but did not specify how much money is involved.

Mexico requested that dispute settlement panels be formed to consider the complaints, but the United States blocked the move.
