The International Committee of the Red Cross has asked for more than $3 million in donations to increase emergency aid in Haiti.
A Red Cross spokesman says the donations would be used to increase surgical and other medical aid for the next four months.
The Red Cross says it has also increased contacts with Haitian political leaders and rebel groups, urging all sides to guarantee protection for civilians and medical workers. The group says it has received reports of threats against medical staff and patients at several Haitian hospitals.
